Voters' rights

These are some of the rights everyCalifornia voter has. You can also download a 1-page Voter’s Bill of Rights from the California Secretary of State’s Office.

  • You have the right to cast a secret ballot, but you can also ask for assistance if you want it.
  • You can still cast your vote if you are present and in line when the polling place closes at 8pm.
  • If your name is not on the list of voters, you still have the right to cast a provisional ballot
  • Your employer is required to provide time off for voting if you are unable to vote outside of working hours. Click here for more information.
  • If you lost your right to vote because you were convicted of a felony, your right to vote is restored once you finish serving time and any parole.
